"I am a singer and an actor. I am primarily an artist. Had I been born in Africa, I would have belonged, I hope, to that family which sings and chants the glories and legends of the tribe. I would have liked in my mature years to have been a wise elder, for I worship wisdom and knowledge of the ways of men"
- Paul Robeson, 1938

The Robey Theatre Playwright Program has, during the course of the past four years, created and refined itself. The program’s curriculum will address the various needs and skill levels of each participant. Each workshop will demonstrate and practice using the nuts and bolts (the how-to) of playwriting. It will be craft-intensive. The Instructor will demonstrate the nature of character, dialogue, conflict and resolution, and their relationships to one another. Writers will practice scene construction with material based on their own personal experiences. Actors will read the drafts of plays in the workshop when appropriate. There will be a good deal of flexibility and a great deal of personal attention to the creation of individual processes of working and the development of craft technique. The next 10-week playwrights workshop of 2009, begins Saturday, January  30th, 2009 and will meet every Saturday through April  10th. There is a maximum of 12 writers.
