Robey Theatre Company: Playwrights

Playwrights Lab

Instructor: Dylan Southard

Saturdays 10am - 1pm     |     February 15 - April 26     |     $200.00

  • The Los Angeles Theatre Center
  • 514 S. Spring St. 3rd Floor
  • Los Angeles, CA. 90013

Approaching our 20th year the Robey Theatre Company looks towards opening even wider areas to serve the Los Angeles community by expanding and refining our Playwrights Program. The program's curriculum thoroughly addresses the various needs and skill levels of each participant.

Our Playwrights Lab is an opportunity for those with or without experience in Playwriting to find a unique and imaginative approach to creating scenes and telling stories in theatrical ways. If you have an interest, but not a great deal of practical experience, in writing for the stage or an idea you wish to create for the theatre, this course will help you to craft dialogue and understand character, while learning the fundamentals of playwriting. If you have more extensive experience in these areas, this session will give you a variety of new ways to approach the process and acclimate you to Robey's approach. Each day in class, new pages of scenes are written and discussed. By the end of the 10 week session, you will have created a body of work, composed of monologues and scenes and understand the inherent nature of writing for the stage.

The sessions provide a craft-intensive and goal oriented experience with the instructor demonstrating the nature of character, dialogue, conflict, and resolution, and their relation to one another. Writers will practice scene construction with material based on their own personal experiences working towards a first draft of an original work. There will be a good deal of flexibility and a great deal of personal attention to the creation of individual process of working and the development of craft technique.

Dylan Southard will join us once again offering unique, intensive, one-on-one work with a trained Dramaturg. He focuses on the continuing, critical examination of original work being developed in the lab, addressing the individual challenges of structure, style and theme that each play will present as it evolves. Playwrights will use the techniques, exercises and feedback the program provides, applying them to their own maturing work, building it from the beginning of an idea to a finished product.

Each session will focus on a re-examination of plays to clarify the more advanced aspects of playwriting: style, tone, premise, etc. Reworked plays will also receive in-house readings by actors when appropriate. Some of these plays will receive a public reading. Dylan's experience adds to the process and Robey welcomes and looks forward to his continued participation.

There is a maximum of 16 writers. The cost is $200 for one ten week session.

Applicants Please Include the Following

Please include a resume or personal history and brief statement of what you hope to achieve or what your goal might be by participating. Artists from other disciplines interested in creating theatre pieces are welcome. If you have something you have written that speaks to what you would be working towards please include. Projects may be anywhere along their developmental path. This could be an idea about a story you wish to develop into a play, the beginning of a scene, monologue, or simply a notion for a play or a first draft of a one act or full length piece. Completion of a work for submission at this point is unimportant. We emphasize process over product. What is important is the beginning of your creative process and providing a glimpse for us to reference. Remember the creative process begins with a thought and that thought deserves development.

Please check your calendars to ensure the resources and commitment of the Robey Theatre Company and Dylan Southard are used efficiently. It is important that attendance be consistent in order to gain maximum rewards.
